The First Revelation (Wahi) to Prophet Muhammed (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam)
Hazrath Syed Ali Bartar
Muhammed (S.A.S.), before he was given the prophet-hood in this world, was a
very pious and a good man. He never worshiped idols. He did not know how to
get a solace of heart so he used to go to a cave, called Hira, near Mecca, his
native place, and used to sit there and spend all his time there all alone.
Once it so happened that an angel “Gabriel” (Jabrail) came to him and said,
“Read”. (Iqra). Prophet Muhammed (S.A.S.) was afraid and said, “I don’t know
reading.” Then again the angel said: “Read” and the Prophet (S.A.S.) gave the
same answer. Then the angel embraced the Prophet (S.A.S.) and again said to
him “Read in the name of your Lord who created.” Then the Prophet Muhammad (S.A.S.)
read this. Then the angel disappeared. The Prophet (S.A.S.), who felt a kind
of fear, came back to his home and asked his wife Bibi Khatija(RZ) to put some
cloth on him. When Bibi Khatija came to know what had happened, she consoled
the Prophet (S.A.S.) asking him not to fear because he had been so kind and
helpful to all and did not trouble or tease any one.
This was the first revelation (Wahi) to Prophet Muhammad (S.A.S.) in his age
of forty. Muhammad (S.A.S.) became the prophet by this and began to teach. The
important lesson from this event for us is that the first instruction sent to
the Prophet (S.A.S.) was to read. Hence we should all read religious books and
know our religion perfectly well
