Q: In how many months can Hajj be done as per the Quran (2:197)? What does Ashurun mean?

Answer:  The days (Ayyam, plural of Yaum) of Hajj are in Zul-Hijja only. The Ash'hur mentioned in the Quran ayat is plural of Shahr (month), and refers that a person may acquire the state of Ihram from Shawwal (It is Makrooh to come in the state of Ihram before Shawwal). So, a person may be in a state of Ihram during Shawwal, Ziqad & Zul-Hijja. Once anyone is in the state of Ihram, then they must honor all the rules of the Ihram.
