Cultural Traditions involving Marriage

Q. I would like to learn about or gather important information around the marriage ceremony and it's practices in Islam. Below, I have highlighted some events surrounding a typical mahdaviya marriage of today's day and age and I would like to understand, among those, what's permitted, what's not, what's acceptable, what's not, in the light of Quran, Hadees, Naqliath and Sunnah, with authentic proof (if time permits). If I have a definitive answer, I can be confident of practicing it accordingly. Events: 1. Manje 2. Mehendi 3. Sangeet 4. Disco and Baja with flavorful dancing of youth and elderly, near the house, on the road and in the marriage hall while commuting to and after reaching marriage hall with groom for nikah. 6. Photo Session with Groom and Bride on stage. 7. Jumaagi(s). I would really appreciate it if the scholar can take some time out and provide a deta…

Machine Cut Vs. Hand Cut Slaughter

Q: Can you elaborate on the fiqh regarding hand slaughter versus machine slaughter? Is machine slaughter permissible, or is it considered haram?

Answer:  For the animal to be permissible, these are the conditions: 1. The person cutting should be a sane Muslim.

2. The person must recite "Bismillahi Allahu Akbar" while cutting.

3. The person must cut the blood veins, food, and breathing pipes.

A machine-cut process can't fulfill the above conditions. Hence, it's not permissible.

Dying on good days

Q: What is the benefit if a person dies on specific days such as Ramadan, Thursday, or Friday? We often hear that the deceased died on a good day. Is there anything in Sunnat or Shariat regarding this?

Answer: There are blessed days, and Allah (SWT) may reward the deceased Muslim with His mercy.

The Messenger of Allah said: "No Muslim dies on the day of Friday, nor the night of Friday, except that Allah protects him from the trials of the grave."  (Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1074)

When the month of Ramadan starts, the gates of heaven are opened, and the gates of hell are closed, and the devils are chained. (Sahih al-Bukhari 1899)

Recipient of Ushr

Q: Before giving Ushr, should we check if he/she is eligible? Should Ushr be given to a person who left worldly pleasures (did tark-e-dunya) to show to the world (show off) and not for the sake of Allah, that is, the person doesn't really follow Faraiz-e-Wilayat?

Answer: If the person is tark-e-dunya and mustahaq (deserving/entitled), you can give Ushr. You do not need to check whether he is following Faraiz-e-Wilayat.

Praying behind Imam

Q: Should we offer prayer separately while performing Umrah, even at this holiest place?

Answer: If there is a Mahdavi Imam with you, you can pray behind him. If there is no Mahdavi Imam, you can pray separately. This rule applies regardless of the location.

Tahiyyatul Wuzu Prayer

Q: Why do Sunni offer Nafil prayer, and we offer Tahiyyatul wuzu as soon as we do ablution? Can we offer tahiyatul wuzu and then nafil also?

We offer Tahiyyatul Wuzu instead of Nafil because Tahiyyatal Wuzu has fazeelath (superior quality) over Nafil. You do not need to pray Nafil after performing Tahiyyatul Wuzu.

Mahdavia teachings are based on the Holy Quran, and we follow Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). The Prophet (PBUH) and the Sahaba (RZ) used to perform Tahiyyatal Wuzu, and the supporting Ahadith are below.

At the time of the Fajr prayer, the Prophet (ﷺ) asked Bilal, "Tell me of the best deed you did after embracing Islam, for I heard your footsteps in front of me in Paradise." Bilal replied, "I did not do anything worth mentioning except that whenever I performed ablution during the day or night, I prayed after that ablution as much as was written…

Suhoor Time

Q: Does the below Hadith imply that our Sehri can go up until Fajr Azaan? Then why do our timings usually display the Sehri to finish about 30 minutes before the Azaan? Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When one of you hears the call to prayer while eating the pre-fasting meal and his vessel is in his hand, let him not put it down until he fulfills his needs from it.” From Sunan Abī Dāwūd 2350

Answer: In the Hadith that you posted (Sunan Abī Dāwūd 2350), almost all Islamic scholars consider this as Maghrib azaan & not Fajr.

Prophet Mohammed صلی الله علیہ وسلم fixed the time for Sehri:

Zayd ibn Thaabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said: “We ate suhoor with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) then he went to pray.” I [the narrator]…

Marriage Permissibility

Q: Is a second marriage allowed in Mahdaviyath? Can a man marry a second time without the permission of his first wife or any legitimate reason?

Answer: Mahdaviath is not different than Islam. Second marriage is allowed in Mahdaviath as it is in Islam. Yes, a man can marry a second time and doesn't need permission from his first wife. He can marry if he has the capacity (Istata'at).

فَانكِحوا ما طابَ لَكُم مِنَ النِّساءِ مَثنىٰ وَثُلاثَ وَرُباعَ ۖ فَإِن خِفتُم أَلّا تَعدِلوا فَواحِدَةً

Then marry the women that seem good to you: two, or three, or four. If you fear that you will not be able to treat them justly, then marry (only) one (4: 3)

Niyaz

Q: What is Niyaz? Why & How is it done?

Answer: Niyaz is called Nazar in Arabic. It is mentioned in the Holy Quran.

Whatever charities you give or vows you make are indeed known to Allah. And the wrongdoers will have no helpers. (2:270)

They ˹are those who˺ fulfil ˹their˺ vows and fear a Day of sweeping horror, and give food—despite their desire for it—to the poor, the orphan, and the captive (76:7-8)
